Taboo

I've been rather lazy this break! Here are my taboo images (finally). I'm really happy with them. I haven't uploaded any to flickr yet because I don't think I've really finished editing them, but there is definitely some stuff in my taboo series I'd like to make prints of. I think I'd like to do more of images like these...

Break Assignment

This is a free form assignment. The images can be a combination of self portraits, a narrative that is important to you, landscapes, still lifes, or a collection of images that you create over the next week that are of value to you.
Most of you will have no problems coming up with ideas.
IF you do not really know what to do, please contact me immediately for some ideas.

Some of you I know well
Some of you I do not know at all
Some of you may not know each other or the kind of work you prefer to do
This is an opportunity for all of us to get to see how we work and develop a knowledge and respect for each class member.

GOALS
·      An opportunity to show your style and imaging preferences to the members of your section of PA_3
·      Practice camera and exposure skills
·      Optimize all images in Lightroom and build collections that group your images.

Assignment Specs:
Create a minimum of 100 images, more is always welcome
Requirements:
o   Use a tripod or mono-pod when necessary
o   Hand held exposure meter
o   Each lighting situation must begin with a Gretag Macbeth Color Checker or
o   Whi-bal card. NO EXCEPTIONS.
Due
Monday March 8, 2010
We will optimize images during class.

OUTPUT costs and expectations
I will expect that each of you have saved enough money to make weekly contact prints, work prints and when appropriate, final prints. Early in the qtr, we will explore a variety of substrates – glossy, lustre, matte etc .., as well as test for scale – which images work better small or large and how does that impact the image.
We will be making our own prints and you may also want to experiment with the ISL and ESP output for large sizes prints.
Expect to spend up to $500 for output costs.
To learn how to print well, it requires learning how to properly optimize your files and then do all the appropriate testing to achieve the correct final print. The only way you know if you have done the file prep right is to make a print! LOTS of prints! Our goal is to begin to understand what is required to optimize, soft proof and make good work prints and final prints.
You will build a portfolio at the end of the year.

Hi all,
Are any of you having problems accessing your email? Since they changed the login page for the gmail it hasn't been accepting my password. I recently changed it so I know it's not expiring, and it works to log me onto mycourses and such sites.
Thanks!

new teachers..... argh

so I've been home for about 12 hours and I'm already going crazy ... although I'm happy to be home. I'm sure you would all agree that it's weird being home and most of your friends are still at college... its strange.

Anyways... I checked my email today and saw I had gotten an email from my new photo teacher...Don
he basically explained what he wanted us to photograph over break.... using a list of words that he attached to the email.
And I sat there for a second... thinking... mhm so this is the guy that is replacing Patti...

Hope everyone has a good break:)
And we are going to Patti's house for dinner when we get back even if I have to stuff you all in my car. We are going. :)

Blaise's Nail adventure ....

This is what Blaise did last night while building ramps at  R.A.S.P.
He was using a very high powered nail gun. Luckily, he missed the bone and it went right thru the fleshy part, so all is well.....
AND, he used his cell phone to capture the moment while in the ER:)

taboo

Here are some of my photos from the taboo assignment. Unfortunately, most of the film didn't develop (I guess that's what I should have expected from a disposable camera, hah).

Mental Graffiti

So I took some photos of my friends performing poetry the other day. I used a 35mm point & shoot film camera for this mostly because it was a spur of the moment thing, and that is all I had on me. They're blurry, yes.. but I think they look sort of interesting. I wanted to maybe integrate their poems into it somehow.. kinda like mixed media. Let me know what you guys think of them or if you had any thoughts of what to do with them possibly, Thanks!

Tabooooooo

Here's some pictures from my taboo/film assignment

Taboo

So, these were shot with expired film.. unintentionally..
the aftermath!

Tarnation

I don't know where to begin this post. I just learned that my friend Luis passed away on Friday. I went to school with him last year in San Francisco. He lived there with his twin brother, Victor. I met them about a year ago and wish I could have spent more time with them. A year ago I went on a spontaneous roadtrip with a bunch of photographers from my school who I didn't really know. Amanda, Anastasiia, Irwin, Brittany, Victor and Luis. Luis was one of 12 brothers and sisters who moved here from Mexico. We drove to LA and after sleeping in parking lots for nights, his parents welcomed all 7 of us into their home, made us coffee and breakfast and pan dulce in the morning. All I could do was smile and say "gracias por todo". They were working on a little zine with black and white film and we ended up forming a close artistic community. I miss them so much. I just don't even know what to say. Because tomorrow I'm going to school to scan film from last year, and I'll have to confront that one-inch rectangle of silver halide molecules forming the image of his face, and I wish I had made more pictures of him. I wish I hadn't been looking elsewhere for beautiful things. I can't imagine what Victor is going through without his other half. It kills me that I'm not over there right now.

There are a million thoughts in my head right now, but for some reason I started thinking about this film called Tarnation, by Jonathan Caouette. The film was created by Caouette from over 20 years of hundreds of hours of old family videos and recordings to tell the story of his life and his relationship with his mentally ill mother Renee. It was initially made for a total budget of $218.32, using free iMovie software on a Mac. This is the first scene from the film, which opens with the song "Naked as we came" by Iron & Wine. There's something really visceral about the song. I can't put my finger on it, but that's what I'm feeling right now. The movie is a beautiful piece of art. I encourage you all to watch it if you have the time.

How do you compartmentalize something like this?

Taboo

I uploaded the images that everyone didn't see in class. So here they are.

l wish l had a boob picture in here so l could title this "taboob"

Note: These are all backwards on purpose. I wanted them to look sort taboo in terms of optimizing since they weren't the most taboo things of life.

Here's me climbing at nationals, just thought I'd show everyone. The photographer that took these pictures has obviously figured out how to take amazing climbing photos which is still my biggest mystery in life.

Owen+Beauty Dish

Just wanted to post the results from that beauty dish I built that some people saw. Worked very well I think, this is just an SB-900 on a TTL cable.

What the world eats

I found an interesting link about a photographer who traveled around the world, taking pictures of families and what they eat on a regular basis. A quote from his website:

Today we are witnessing the greatest change in global diets since the invention of agriculture. Globalization, mass tourism, and giant agribusiness have filled American supermarket shelves with extraordinary new foods and McDonald's, Kentucky Fried Chicken, and Kraft Cheese Singles are being exported to every corner of the planet.

Mine would be Alice in Wonderland. I feel like that would be cozy.

Interesting Faux HDR technique via the High Pass filter

http://dustinsnipes.com/blog/2009/01/30/tutorial-photoshop-for-70-basketball-portraits-in-in-two-days/

FYI - if you try this technique add the following steps:

  • Save the file with all the layers as a .tiff.
  • THEN flatten for printing
This way, if you do not like the results, you can always go back to the original layers and tweak.

Bruce Gilden

I wanted to embed this video, but the Youtube version isn't working that well, so here's the link from WNYC: http://www.wnyc.org/streetshots/

I watch this whenever I need a little inspiration-- Bruce Gilden is a New York street photographer, in Magnum, has a snarky sense of humor and makes awesome photographs. Another person to check out if you like his work is Gilles Peress.

Loverboy

So I wanted to share something with you all that has been one of my biggest inspirations for a very very long time.

This is a short film written by one of the TAs of the New York State Summer School for the Arts when I attended back in 2008. Every still, every clip I've found something I love. Not only is the writing absolutely amazing, but the cinematography, lighting, acting, and directing is just magical.

The film is something I always kind of refer back to when I'm out shooting. It reminds me that while we should always be looking at photographers, we should also be looking at every kind of art to find something to draw parallels to and inspire us. Plus it always manages to put a smile on my face :)

Todd Hido will be in Rochester for a Charlie Arnold Lecture on 2/11 evening.
BUT - based on weather in the country right now he may not make it!
Love his work and think you should peruse his site and consider going to the lecture.
I am still sitting in the airport. Someone remind me to not plan work trips in the winter...sigh

Sun? What's that?

So, I don't know if anyone else noticed, but we actually had golden hour afternoon sunshine today, for the first time in like 3827349812 months. In case you've forgotten, the sun is a star millions of miles away from earth that gives us heat and light so that plants and animals can live. Anyway, I hope you got out and shot, it was cold but beautiful :)

two photos, field trip

so two photos taken with the same camera and same lens 24 hours and 6 minutes apart. Very different and both very 'me'. Just thought it was interesting to see how different the looked next to each other.

I also want to say I vote for a field trip where we can shoot and get outside.
